Flowers in the Attic (What If Friday)

Happy Late Friday! You know what that means…it is time for another question from If (Questions for the Game of Life). Remember, my goal is to invoke thought, and encourage randomness all at the same time.  Bear with me I have had a glass or two of wine and just finished painting!!!

Question: If you could find one thing, besides money, in your family attic, what would you want to discover?

Let me start by saying attics absolutely creep me out, even more since watching American Horror Story last season!  I’m not likely to willingly go into one unless it is to retrieve money. So if I’m in said attic I hope I don’t find ghosts, possums or other living creatures, disfigured human children, or anybody elderly.   I also hope that I don’t fall through the ceiling or step on insulation (its itchy).

If I had to pick something other than money to find in my family attic, I would want historical documents (photos, letters, journals, travel orders, health records, etc) OR I would want to find music (records, tapes, sheet music, etc)!

Family history is awesome and I don’t know mine well at all. I would love more photos and memories of my family even the family I don’t know.  They say you can’t know where you’re going unless you know where you have been!  I would rather not pay the ancestry.com fee and would much rather find that information in my family attic, in a box covered in about 25 years worth of dust!  I also hope to find it already scrap booked and in digital form (this is my fantasy people no objections)!

Music is another thing that tells a chronicled story about a person.  What does your playlist say about you??? To find the music my family members listened to through the years is a great way to have insight into history in the most creative way, plus it would give me a kick ass record collection.  I will one day own a record player and in true artsy, anti-conformity, elitist spirit I will play records on it just so I can get that crackle sound, impress my house guests, and really enjoy the classics in original form!

That is all people…get out of the attic and go have a great night!!!

Friends come in many forms!

Insult to Injury

Those in my inner circle are fully aware of my clumsy nature. Yes I walk in to stationary objects, even when sober. I also have fits of what I call “fumble fingers” where I drop things randomly and without just cause.  Only because I can laugh at myself do I share these inner secrets with the world.

Yesterday, in true accident prone fashion, I actually slipped and fell on Stone Mountain.  In my defense it was raining. Also in my defense it wasn’t raining when I started.  2 days a week me and a fabulous Jamaican lady that I know, hike up and down the Mountain of Stone (as I like to call it).  We get our physical fitness on, talk shit, take photos of people inappropriately dressed, appreciate the beauty of tone abdominal muscles, and complain about the heat. It has been written in the prophecy to occur for an entire summer.

As you may have read I went out of town about 2 weeks ago and then celebrated my birthday. So for reasons well within my control we did not go on our weekly adventure. I have a no workout rule for the week of my birth, because I want to enjoy every calorie I indulge in! To get back in the swing of things we decided to go on Monday (to avoid rain which was scheduled for Tuesday our regular workout day).

So I lace up my shoes, put on my 80-‘s style head band and get ready to get physical as Olivia Newton John plays in my head! I was ready to take on the evening. I should have known things weren’t going to go my way when we hit traffic. We never hit traffic, odd I thought not knowing the misfortune heading my way. We detour but arrive to our destination only a few minutes behind schedule to find nothing but parking spots. How odd I thought, we always have to drive around.

Up we climb, tired, winded, out of breath.  We reach the top and take in the view. A view of dark clouds and extreme winds; much like in the movies my spidey-sense kicked into full gear.  Jamaican Houston we have a problem. We have to hustle down this mountain before the rain starts. So hustle we did and much like a ninja gliding through a battle I was jumping off rocks and running down paths. Passing women with babies and elderly power walkers; fighting a race against the clock.

We get halfway down when it begins to rain. My immediate concern was my cell phone and my ipod, so I wrapped them both in a towel and kept it movin. I watched people slip; I helped a woman who fell and did my best to avoid the water puddles forming every minute.  With my glasses covered in rain and my heart pounding, I looked up and saw the finish line, the start of the path, the end of my workout journey. Then I see a woman almost fall so in true ninja fashion I move right to avoid her fate, only to find a 5 year old about to fall. I made an impressive effort to save his fragile and young life by diving to his aid.  I slip, I fall, I suffer injury but the boy was ok and that was all that mattered.

Unfortunately that is not how it happened. No children were harmed in the telling of this story.  In actuality, I moved right only to land in a puddle of water, losing my footing falling backwards.  Yes there were witnesses, yes I yelled obscenities. Yes I hurt myself. After being helped to my feet and appreciating the irony of falling all at the end of my workout, I departed Stone Mountain, rain soaked and sore.

I do want to clarify that when you are about to die your life doesn’t actually flash before your eyes but you do hear Robin Leach (Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous) tell you to brace yourself for impact and to have champagne wishes and caviar dreams.  I know, not what I expected either!

Thanks to the Film Majors team for wrapping my wrist and helping me ice it and heat it at the same damn time. Thanks to Doc McStuffins (check out Nick Jr) for helping me know when to seek medical care.  Shout-out to Emory for seeing me this morning, diagnosing my sprain, and letting me know if it ain’t broke you can still fix it.  Thanks to my friends for laughing behind my back and not to my face, 29 year old slip and fall injuries are hilarious so I applaud you. I clearly need to live in a protective bubble to avoid future occurrences.

Lesson Learned: Don’t work out just starve yourself to lose weight, it’s safer!
*I’m kidding people we all know I love food too much for all that

I am officially too old for this shit!!!!

This is not my hand! LOL

Sportsmanlike Conduct

Yesterday I spent some time with my friend Dr. K, did some shopping, and then watched part of the closing ceremony of the Olympics. During the course of the day we argued about various statements including “he is an athlete that means he is attractive”.  Of course this was not my statement as I avoid dating athletes in the same way I avoid the plague by using repellants, limiting direct physical contact, wearing personal protective equipment (PPE), and frequently hand washing. I mainly avoid athletes because they can be prone to infidelity and insecurity. Yes I know that is generalizing but that’s real life people, it doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate them or their hard work!   My response to her statement was hold up, not true; he may have a great body but from the neck up I could do without him.  She argues athletes are attractive because of work ethic, dedication, physical fitness, and competitive spirit.  Her being an athlete makes her bias. Her being attractive also makes her bias.  Either way being an athlete doesn’t mean you are attractive!  However, it does mean you are rich and women looking to come-up in the world without working are likely to throw themselves at you making you feel more attractive.
Dr. K and I then had an ongoing discussion about the influence of dating history on attractiveness of athletes (or people in general). Case in point, the news that Ryan Locthe dated a certain woman from Love and Hip Hop, made him more attractive to us because that means he likes a little mocha with his cream (if you know what I mean).  After overcoming the general disappointment that he chose a black woman with such “ghetto chaos” surrounding her, he eventually earned extra attractive points because that means we stood a chance.  So yes probability of reciprocated interest does impact attractiveness in select celebrity athletes.
Our conversation then transitioned from attractiveness to likability, then to behavior and the plain crazy of athlete and reality star combinations. Our discussion reached a peak when we read the headlines about Chad Johnson, his wife and their domestic violence dispute.
Now I’m not one to make light of domestic violence so I will focus more on the sheer stupidity of this relationship and the reported events.  Let’s discuss shall we?
1.      Who marries somebody they met on twitter? – Really Ochocinco (can I call you that) did you think this internet meeting would really end with a successful holy matrimony? We all knew this was a crazy combination from the start. You being a sober jackass, she being an attention seeking basketball ex-wife equals impaired judgment either way you slice it!
2.      You are never too rich to ask your mistress to buy her own condoms – seriously you don’t buy those! Let the side chick use some of that hush money you pay her to purchase those.  No need to get your hands all the way dirty just be sure to check for pin pricks these girls are out here tryin to trap a playa!
3.      Discard all evidence – why leave receipts in your trunk. Even if your wife won’t find it the cleaning lady, car washer, whoever will find it and potentially use it to write a tell-all book about your famous ass! Do better, use your thinking cap and not your penis when making decisions.
4.      Don’t get married if you aren’t ready – if you are not trying to settle down then don’t put a ring on her finger. Don’t let Beyoncé influence you! You didn’t have to marry her; we all know she was giving it up just fine without a ring.  Too soon! Don’t do it! Reconsider…Keep your heart 3 stacks, keep your heart! But seriously why marry somebody just to cheat on them, save yourself the jail time, pain, misery, and money…just date! Then try out dating exclusively. Then consider sharing property and signing pre-nups.
5.      Head-butting is reserved for MFA fights – when handling issues with your spouse it is not ok to practice your MFA moves or to channel Street Fighter characters. Save the head-butting for the field Chad! PS: what circumstances allow for your response to be a head-butt? Did she pin your arms down? Did you have both hands in your pocket in an effort to not punch her? Were you holding trident gum in both hands? Were you handcuffed? Carrying groceries maybe? I just don’t know how that is your first reaction.  I could see shaking the shit out of her.  I could see holding her down to prevent her from hitting you (if that was the case). Either way unless she had you restrained and was brandishing a weapon how do you just head-butt somebody? Remember just because you have a big head doesn’t mean you should use it for evil!
6.      You are a celebrity – despite asking to be one you chose a career path that requires you to be in the public eye. That means you have to use better judgment and make better decisions when it comes to relationships and interactions. If you make mistakes there are bigger consequences (i.e. losing your job). You know the NFL is holier-than-thou and in true superior fashion regulates your behavior off the field by punishing you on the field.  Get yourself together Chad! Maybe you can buy an orange grove in Miami and set-up one of those road side stands.  Professional x-box player?  Open a MFA gym; you already have the moves down. Either way I see a season of Dancing with the Stars and some VHI programing in your future because now you are a violent liability.
7.      Sportsmanship- Chad as an athlete you should exercise sportsmanlike conduct at all times. Don’t be a sore loser (when caught).  Don’t cheat! Don’t taunt the other players. Play fair – even playing field using the designated rules, means no head-butting. Maintain self-control if dealing with other players (and your spouse). Respect authority and your opponents. Be a good sport Chad that is one of the expectations of a good athlete.
I do find it unfortunate that during the culmination of the world’s greatest sports event, news coverage turns to the unsportsmanlike conduct of Chad Johnson.  I also find it incredibly bizarre that football is not an Olympic sport.  I mean trampoline and table tennis made the cut! Also where is dodgeball? That should be a sport too! I would watch that over Basketball Wives any day!

Woman of Virtue (What If Friday)

Happy Friday! As my birthday week comes to a close, I’m yet again posed with another question from If (Questions for the Game of Life). Remember, my goal is to invoke thought, and encourage randomness all at the same time.
Question: If you were to have only one of the prime virtues, which one would you want to possess?
Before I answered this question, I needed to identify the prime virtues.  So I could decide which one I prioritized above the others. According to the internet, there are 7 prime virtues which I have defined for your benefit (and mine).
1.      Compassion - a feeling of deep sympathy and sorrow for another, accompanied by a strong desire to alleviate suffering.  Will you give up the last teriyaki wing because I had a bad day?!
2.      Admiration - a feeling of wonder, pleasure, or approval; the act of looking on or contemplating with pleasure; an object of wonder, pleasure, or approval.  Respect is better than infamy, just ask Lindsey Lohan?!
3.      Wisdom - the quality or state of being wise; knowledge of what is true or right coupled with just judgment as to action; sagacity, discernment, or insight.  Do you speak and understand Confucius?!
4.      Trust - reliance on the integrity, strength, ability, surety, etc., of a person or thing; confidence; confident expectation of something.  Do you do what you say you will?!
5.      Truth - conformity with fact or reality; a verified or indisputable fact, proposition, principle. Will you pass a lie detector?!
6.      Courage - the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, etc., without fear; bravery. Will you fight somebody addicted to bath salts?!
7.      Spirituality - the quality or fact of being spiritual; incorporeal or immaterial nature; predominantly spiritual character as shown in thought, life, etc.; spiritual tendency or tone. Is God the first person in your acceptance speech?!
Now that I know my choices my answer is Wisdom! For multiple reasons, I think wisdom sets me up to have all the other virtues in some capacity. Insight is beneficial in life and important when making decisions or reflecting on circumstances. Seeing as how life is a series of choices and actions, I feel wisdom will benefit me much more than the other virtues. Besides a wise person knows when to exercise compassion, what is admirable, who to trust, how to navigate truth, what comprises courage, and the importance of spirituality.  Essentially a wise person can be all knowing and super powerful! I also think some of the most influential role models in life are considered wise!
I’m sure all God’s friends think he is wise! Ghandi is wise!  Think about it Leonardo Da Vinci, Andrew Carnegie, Oprah Winfrey, Albert Einstien, Ralph Waldo Emerson all wise and insightful individuals. Also famous, rich, and super bad ass!
Besides I totally speak Confucius and everybody knows understanding Chinese proverbs means you have wisdom!
By three methods we may learn wisdom: First, by reflection, which is noblest; Second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest. – Confucius

Talk does not cook rice. – Chinese Proverb that means get off your butt and make the rice you lazy bum!

See I am already wise beyond my years…

Good Deeds

I have many friends of the cynical variety and I’m constantly fighting the good person battle.  I am not a conspiracy theorist, and I don’t believe people are out to get me. I’m also not a subscriber to the belief that people are inherently bad. Sure this world can be bad, sure some people are bad people but overall I believe in the goodness of spirit and people as a whole. Some feel that makes me naïve, others think I’m a fool.  I just think I’m a believer!
I was attending a conference most of this week and listened to a presentation were many great points were made about humanity and the way westerners meander through life.  The most impactful statement I heard was:
Most citizens regardless of the country don’t trust their government. This is a common occurrence internationally and domestically. But only the United States has a government that doesn’t trust its citizens.
Now in the context of public health the point was being made that regular citizens (Toms, Dicks, Harrys, and Janes) are capable of responding in emergencies. We aren’t always victims; sometimes the bystander can be an active participant in helping solve a problem. This is true but something has stopped us as a whole from executing and it isn’t our government. Maybe we are untrustworthy but it wasn’t always that way! One argument is that society as a result of certain government infrastructures has us conditioned to be bystanders.  The argument I am making is capitalism and western socialization have us conditioned to fear the consequences of being a helping hand! I also think this country is short of common sense and common decency but that is for another blog!
We are a country that values the life of animals more than human beings.  A country that forms advocacy groups that don’t advocate, creates non-profit organizations to make profit, and swindles hard-working folks with gimmicks and schemes. I’m not sure when doing the right thing became a liability but apparently it is! The obvious is no longer obvious and the simple things have become increasingly complex. On average more people assume somebody else will handle a problem and avoid helping to evade being burdened. Well assumptions make an ass out of you and whoever you are trying to avoid helping.
Only in America can you try to save someone’s life and get sued!  Only in America is it customary to watch a person suffer because you are waiting on  first responders to tell you how to act. Only in America is it more profitable to be a bystander than to help a person overcome tragedy. Hiding in the shadows gets you a front row seat that comes with 15 minutes of fame. I-witness accounts get you book deals! You tube videos get you press coverage!
Then there is the fear that the person you are attempting to help is a sociopathic decoy trying to trap you so they can kill, steal, or make an example out of you! There is a lot to be fearful of in today’s world when trying to help others. But for all of the people out there looking to cash in, there are still many of us that genuinely care about the well-being of others. Some people really need your help, so just help them!
Today I am advocating for those who live above the new incredibly low standard for being a good neighbor. I thank those willing to offer a helping hand or a free meal. I applaud the kind-hearted and giving spirits in this world! Kudos to you and I am happy to be on your team!
I want to give a special thank you to the random woman from Texas that offered me her sandwich today because she thought I was being unfairly treated!  Your kindness made me realize (a) I should be angry at my job for not springing for the meal tickets and (b) people can be kind to strangers without ulterior motives!
Do a good deed today and make a difference! Here are some things you may consider:
·         Apply pressure to a  wound
·         Buy somebody lunch
·         Cover your mouth when you cough
·         Don’t be a homewreacker
·         Don’t laugh when a person falls down…offer to help them up first
·         Don’t speed through the puddle in front of a bus stop
·         Donate to charity or your church
·         Give a dollar to a panhandler (it’s just a dollar and so what if he is using it to buy alcohol)
·         Give directions to a lost pedestrian or international visitor
·         Give somebody a compliment
·         Give up your Marta seat to a pregnant woman or an elderly person
·         Head-butt a terrorist (not a suspected terrorist but an actual one in the middle of high jacking something)
·         Hold open a door for the person behind you
·         If you see a suspicious package tell somebody
·         Leave money in the restaurant tip jar
·         Let somebody cut in front of you on I-85
·         Offer to help somebody change a tire
·         Pay the toll for the person behind you
·         Pray for someone
·         Respect crosswalks (pedestrians have the right of way)
·         Say excuse me when you bump into people
·         Tell your friend what you really think of her baby daddy (without attitude or an audience)
·         Throw out your leg to stop a mugger from running off with an old lady’s purse
·         Try to return a lost cell phone if you find it
·         Turn down the radio when your passenger gets on the phone
·         Use your turn signal before actually turning

This has been an LC public service announcement!!!! Remember to just do the right thing!

Birthday Week Begins

Happy early birthday to myself and Happy Monday to you all!  It is officially 2 days until I turn a fine 29! And I am home sweet home and back to business.  I have vacated upstate New York hoping to never return (dear Beastie please move back down south).  I feel the need to recap my weekend and upcoming birthday plans just to bring more joy to my jet-lagged mind.
So I traveled to Syracuse, NY last week for what was originally supposed to be a pre-birthday vacation full of partying and drinking and the oh so funtastic Atlantic City.  Well Mr. S. Russell (the S stands for Stonewall) had other plans.  My ace-boon-coon was diagnosed with kidney stones and rendered invalid after having surgery a few days before I arrived.  So I spent quite a few days playing Nurse Betty, Driving Miss Daisy, and being the Maid in Manhattan but in upstate NY.
I don’t mind caring for friends it’s kind of what I do but I was bummed I didn’t get to party it up and have the kind of fun I had anticipated. However, I was paid in trident gum and food which resolved any residual hard feelings that were brewing.
I do need to express my utter annoyance and current dislike for upstate New York! Syracuse is nice and all but we had a few kinks that caused me to simmer and nearly boil over with aggravation.
1) Gift Shop Highway Robbery – yes I went to buy nick-nacks and customary trinkets from a local gift store near the university.  To the store owner that swiped my card before giving me a total it is not ok that you charged me $73.98 for 5 items (coffee mug, socks, bottle opener, and 2 magnets). No it isn’t cool and yes I said something but you playing dumb and then pointing out that all sales are final after I purchase is really jackass of you.
2) University Eavsedropping – dear college girls it is not acceptable for you to eavesdrop on conversations hoping to find out if we are talking about students you may know. We are 29, we don’t go to your school, and yes it’s ok for our friends to be pregnant because they are adults. Never in your life should you turn your chair to actively listen to another person’s conversation. Use your manners and listen covertly!
3) French Revolution – dear man from Quebec no I don’t speak French. No it’s not ok to approach women on the street and follow them talking in your weird accent for 3 blocks. No I don’t have anything else to say other than welcome to New York!
4) Blackberry Sucks – dear blackberry please stop ruining my adult life. When I click email messages I should get those (not texts). When I post to facebook it shouldn’t take 20 minutes.  When I enable foursquare you shouldn’t freeze. Just work I have to keep you for 8 more months and I really don’t want to cause you bodily harm.
5) Airport Woes – Rochester airport you are a disgrace to all that is airport glory. Sure you have short lines but your airport staff is clearly subpar and uninformed. Really open my suitcase and take out everything, then ask me to move quickly replacing the mess? Really not assigning me a seat or boarding zone when I checked in? Really not telling passengers of the weather delay? Really not having any real restaurants and food? Really not having enough overhead space for 10-12 people’s bags, then checking my luggage? I’m over you and next time I will pay the extra $100 and fly into LaGuardia because they know what they are doing.

I did learn some valuable lessons while in NY including:
·         My stomach is no longer equipped to handle mousse-based desserts no matter how tasty
·         I hate the smell of cities (never breath through your nose)
·         Driving a Camry is pretty nice
·         Crab legs can cause hand injuries
·         I want a blue nose pit-bull
·         I can cook under any conditions including not having pots
·         Any sales tax higher than 7% makes me sad
·         Olympic Track and Field is the business
·         If trampoline is a sport so is Sour Patch Kids Couch Catch (we were bored)
That entire series of incidents aside, I returned safely to my home state of Georgia and my birthday kicked into high gear because of the Realest man I know! He was there to greet me with hugs, kisses, and PRESENTS.  Apparently blogging and list making pays off because this girl right here ended up with the best birthday presents EVER! I received my very own iPad TV connector (complete with onsite installation) and the Coach- Bleecker Weekend Tote. Two gifts that totally kick ass! Netflix instant stream from my iPad to my TV has implications no one can truly understand and a coach weekender makes all the difference when navigating airport foolishness (sometimes a purse just won’t do).  So thank you kind sir you have started the Birthday week off in glorious fashion. This birthday is going to be great!
Next up is dinner with some greats on Wednesday and gift pick-up from the parental untis on Friday! I’m thinking me and another fine Leo lady I know need to have some kind of gathering on Saturday! We shall see!

What If Friday – Redo

As customary on Friday today’s topic is coming direct and in full effect from If (Questions for the Game of life).  As I sit in Syracuse, NY and play If with my best friend this blog is officially coming together! It was hard to pick just one question today but I hunkered down and made a decision… enjoy and as always feel free to share your answers!

Question: If you had to identically repeat any single year of your life to date, without changing a thing, which year would you relive?

So there many years I enjoyed but none completely enough to relive! Most of the 80s and early 90s I would avoid primarily because of bad fashion! Seriously!!!!  Then there is high school, which I was not the biggest fan of, mainly because I worked like a slave trying to get into college (clubs, sports, school work, and an actual job). If I would have known I was going to end up at UGA I might have relaxed a little and snuck out of the house more!

Then there is college, which for the most part is a haze but I made some pretty bad decisions in college and continued to overwork myself so I wouldn’t exactly want to relive it. Some things are better left forgotten (thanks alcohol for helping me leave the past in the past).

Then I graduated into my mid-20s and lived a roller coaster of health woes, job stress, weight fluctuation, family drama, financial freakiness, and a slew of murder mysteries (books that is)! There are many moments I would like to burn from my memory and a few I would love to just relive over and over but alas I have to pick an entire year! With all of that said I think I would chose my first year of life (1983 -1984) for several reasons including:

  1. I don’t remember it
  2. I survived it without health issues or major sickness
  3. I was still an only child and the apple of my parents’ eye
  4. My only joys were eating and sleeping (like now in my adult life but the difference is people expected me to do it without dirty looks)
  5. People waited on me hand and foot
  6. I was adorable even when I cried
  7. No working/ No job
  8. I didn’t have to wear pants (I’m definitely anti-pants)
  9. The world was amazing and new (now I’m just shocked and appalled with it)
  10. Binge Eating – yes I could eat whatever I wanted and gaining weight was appropriate
  11. Perfect skin (soft like my bottom)
  12. I was too young to know the true impact of Reaganomics
  13. Boys were a non-mutha f’in factor (phrase as learned from reality tv)

So now you know my answer! I’m going to go back to this 90210 (the original) marathon, grab some sour patch kids, and at some point visit the streets of downtown Syracuse!  See ya next blog!
